A Bad Headstock Break On a Sigma
At first glance, this appears to be a
clean headstock break.  The angle of
the break is typical, and it appears that
there is enough surface area to
provide an adequate glue joint.
On closer inspection, there is a great
deal of wood missing from the break.
There is no way a glue joint along will
hold this together.  I will have to resort
to a technique called a "Backstrap
Overlay".  This is used for breaks
where just gluing isn't enough.
The first step is just simply to glue the
headstock back together.  Care must
be taken to get it aligned correctly,
since the missing wood allows the joint
to move around while gluing.  I just
used Titebond here.  There is a flat
wood plate that is tacked to the face of
the headstock.  This plate acts as a
caul for the first gluing, but will serve a
very important role later.
